Equine Movement Patterns in Relation to Biomechanical Tissue with Dr Kirk Peck

Equine athletes are subjected to a variety of physical demands based on sport specific requirements. Competitive events including show jumping, dressage, eventing, and track racing require highly conditioned and adaptable equine body tissues and physiologic abilities. Sustaining injuries during conditioning and competitive events are commonly encountered by horses that are selected to train and participate in the world of sport. 

Biomechanical faults resulting from such injuries can limit soft tissue and joint motion that negatively impact an ability to perform at peak levels. Identifying, correcting, and reconditioning biomechanical faults is imperative to safeguarding equine wellness and promoting long-term quality of life. This session will explore common biomechanical tissue restrictions that occur with the sporting horse and discuss options to restore function.

Kirk Peck PT, PhD, CSCS, CCRT, CERP

Physical Therapist Certified in Equine and Canine Rehabilitation

 

Dr. Peck received a BS degree in Exercise Science from Kansas State University, a Master of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Kansas Medical Center and PhD from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. His clinical expertise involves treating sports and orthopedic related conditions and providing physical therapy for Native Americans in an outpatient facility governed by the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska. Dr. Peck is past President of the Animal Physical Therapy Special Interest Group of the APTA Orthopedic Academy of Physical Therapy (2013-19), and current SIG liaison to the World Physiotherapy Animal PT Network. He is a core instructor in the University of Tennessee’s Certification Program in Equine Rehabilitation in addition to collaborating with veterinary professionals in treating canine clients. Dr. Peck has presented on the topics of equine rehabilitation, including both horse and rider biomechanics nationally and internationally. He is a member of the editorial board for the “Journal of Equine Rehabilitation” (Elsevier), in addition to serving as an advising Board member for “Ignite for Equine Athletes”, an organization supporting international equine health and fitness. Dr. Peck is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical therapy at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, where he teaches clinical exercise physiology, human cadaveric anatomy, and political advocacy for PT practice. He is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
