Principles of Correct Saddle Fit
Dr Russell MacKechnie-Guire and Mark Fisher
Centaur Biomechanics Training and Research, Dunstaffanage House, Moreton Morrell, Warwickshire, CV35 9BD
09:30 – 17:00 HRS BST
The saddle couples the rider with the horse and should be balanced to allow the rider to be correctly positioned and be able to apply subtle weight aids. Correct saddle fit is essential to ensure that the saddle does not hinder, or cause back discomfort; however, how do you define correct saddle fit. This course will be a mixed blend of theory and hands-on practical sessions and will cover areas associated with saddle fit. The objective of the course is to provide information to delegates that can be used within their own work whether as a horse owner, coach, therapist, saddle fitter or other professional.
Theory:
- Static and dynamic saddle fitting principles from an anatomical and biomechanical perspective.
- Objective methods to support saddle fitting
Practical’s:
- Rider-saddle fit
- Does my saddle fit? What to look for.
- Saddle pressures – how are they influenced by rider weight, skill and gait?
- Evaluation and management of horses with saddle slip
Cost
£200 plus VAT
Spaces are limited to allow for a more hands on and interactive experience.
Notes:
CPD certificates available
Refreshments are provided; however, lunch is not included. The nearest shops are 10-minutes from Dunstaffanage House. It is advised to bring your own lunch.
The practical session will involve being in an arena with a horse and rider, please ensure that you wear appropriate footwear and clothing for standing in an arena.

EQUINE & RIDER SPECIFIC BIOMECHANICS COURSES
Centaur Biomechanics led by Dr. Russell MacKechnie-Guire, offer an array of courses and CPD options which cover both equine biomechanics and rider biomechanics. The courses cover areas associated with horse and rider biomechanics, health and performance. To date, courses have been attended by delegates from all over the world. All of the courses feature Centaur Biomechanics extensive research portfolio in horse, saddle and rider interaction and therapy solutions. Centaur Biomechanics has delivered courses all over the world as well as in the UK. Centaur has provided biomechanics course for multiple therapy associations, society of master saddlers, Pony Club, British Horse Society and other leading associations. Courses are generally held at Centaur Biomechanics Training Centre, Moreton Morrell, however, on request courses can be run at additional venues.
One Day Introductory Equine Biomechanics Course
The Centaur Biomechanics “One Day Introductory Equine Biomechanics Course” is a great way to learn more about the biomechanics associated with equine health and performance. This course, covers anatomy, demands on elite sports horses, conformation, how to assess horse’s movement and the effect that the saddle and bridle have on equine locomotion. This course is of interest to anyone who wants to learn more and improve their understanding around the biomechanics of the horse. This course is of particular of interest to horse owners, coaches, trainers, saddle fitters, therapists, physiotherapist and para professionals.
One Day Rider Biomechanics Course
The Centaur Biomechanics “One Day Rider Biomechanics Course’ is a great way to learn more about the principles associated with correct rider biomechanics; becoming an effective rider, how to apply the seat and leg aids, the effect that the rider has on the horse and strategies on how to improve rider biomechanics. This course covers an array of topics and is of interest to anyone who wants to become a better rider, improve their riding or understand in greater detail the effect that the rider has on the horse. This course is of particular interest to horse owners, coaches, trainers, saddle fitters, therapists, physiotherapist and para professionals.
Two Day Equine Biomechanics & Introduction to Saddle Fitting Course
The Centaur Biomechanics “Two Day Equine Biomechanics and Introduction to Saddle Fitting” covers in detail the interaction between the horse, saddle and rider. This course features anatomy, spinal kinematics, assessing horses for gait quality and conformation, detailed presentations of Centaur’s extensive research, ridden demonstrations, gait analysis and using technology within equestrian. The second day is largely based around saddle fit for horse and rider. This day is a hands-on day, providing an insight into the principles of saddle fit. This course is of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about the interaction between the horse, saddle and rider and learn more about the principles of saddle fit. This course is of particular interest to saddle fitters, therapists, physiotherapist, veterinarians, farriers, para professionals, horse’s owners, coaches and trainers.
Professional CPD & Horse Owners Educational Workshops
Centaur Biomechanics offer two different types of CPD courses and a Horse Owners Educational Workshop.
The two CPD courses cover some of Centaur Biomechanics extensive research into equine biomechanics and rider performance as well practical demonstrations on how technology can be used to improve our understanding on equine locomotion and the interaction between the horse, saddle and rider. Our CPD days would be of interest to riders, coaches, saddle fitters, physios, therapists and veterinarians, farriers and other para professionals.
Our new course for 2020 is our “Horse Owners Educational Workshop”, these days are designed to give horse owners an insight into equine biomechanics and rider performance. These courses are open to all and can take place within the stable yard setting. These days, trialled in late 2019, were hugely popular in providing horse owners with useful and tangible information which they can use with their own horses.
